The Art & History of the Toothpick

What started as a collection of antiques quickly revealed itself as an unexpected piece of art and cultural history.

Dr. Steven Potashnick owns what many believe to be the world’s largest collection of antique toothpicks: more than 1,500 pieces dating back to the Roman Empire. Some were used by European royalty, most are one of a kind, and every one has a fascinating story behind it.

The challenge was turning such an unusual and massive collection into something visually compelling and approachable. Documenting 1,500 tiny artifacts is no small task, especially when each deserved museum-level attention.

During the height of the pandemic, the project evolved over two years. Every toothpick was photographed from multiple angles, carefully color-corrected, and meticulously placed (at actual size) into layout

The final 350-page book features more than 2,800 images showcasing the incredible diversity, craftsmanship, and creativity behind what most people see as an everyday object. What started as a collection of antiques quickly revealed itself as an unexpected piece of art and cultural history.

Dr. Potashnick was thrilled with how the book came together, and the finished piece is every bit as unique as the collection itself. It’s a true conversation starter, surprising, entertaining, and genuinely educational all at once.
